Why it’s important

The Faversham Assembly Rooms is a much-loved and very elegant early Victorian building which was restored and brought back to the people of Faversham thanks to a group of volunteers in 2016 after nearly 150 years in the hands of the Ministry of Defence, known for many years as the Drill Hall and Shooting Range. This historic Grade 2 listed building is now home to a huge variety of events ranging from concerts to rehearsals, meetings to conferences, celebrations, weddings corporate events and private parties. It is the home of Faversham Music Club and Faversham Voices and hosts the prestigious Faversham Literary Festival. Beyond this it’s a space for community gatherings, classes and clubs, school’s events and classes, creating a hub venue for the town and surrounding areas.

We don’t want to lose it

The building is a Charity and is entirely run by volunteers (Faversham Buildings Preservation Trust) and survives on the money raised from its hire. But this is not enough, and so we are now starting this fundraising campaign to ensure that Faversham doesn’t lose this wonderful building and the venue for community activities for which it serves. The space is now a thriving centre for so much of Faversham’s social and cultural fabric that it would be devastating to have to close its doors.

What’s the money for?

Old buildings are expensive to run and maintain and the core costs for the building are proving challenging. As well as simply keeping the doors open we’d also like to develop some facilities so that the space is both up to date for those who wish to use it, and more efficient and sustainable in respect of heating and energy. All this costs money.
